LAÚNDOS, Portugal (AP) — Guilherme Peixoto, a village priest in northern Portugal, has been busy this month celebrating Masses at his two parishes, presiding over remembrances for the dead — and preparing the electronic music set for his next international DJ gig. "They can think, 'If it’s possible for a priest to be DJ, it’s possible for me to like music, and festivals, and be Christian.'" The priest broke onto the global stage when the organizers of World Youth Day in Lisbon asked him to “wake up the pilgrims” at 7 a.m. before Pope Francis’ open-air Mass in August. There, he re-mixed electronic dance beats with words from Pope Francis’ encyclical about protecting the environment. “It’s very important to me to not only be the priest DJ, but be the shepherd of the community,” Peixoto said.

(Reuters) - Hurricane Norma has slightly weakened but remains a major storm poised to deliver heavy rainfall and flooding to the popular tourist coast of Mexico's Baja California peninsula over the next few days, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said on Friday. A gradual weakening is anticipated over the next few days, but Norma is forecast to still be a hurricane when it approaches the southern portion of Baja California Sur, said the NHC. Mexico's government has issued tropical storm warnings for various areas, including La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, and extending north from Todos Santos to the Santa Fe district. The hurricane center predicts that these regions will experience tropical storm conditions within a 36-hour time frame. The storm could result in up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain in parts of Baja California, potentially causing flooding and landslides.

Pope Francis attends a press conference onboard a plane en route to Rome, at the end of the XXXVII World Youth Day in Lisbon, August 6, 2023. ANSA/Maurizio Brambatti/Pool via REUTERSABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Sunday that the Catholic Church is open to everyone, including the gay community, and that it has a duty to accompany them on a personal path of spirituality but within the framework of its rules. "The Church is open to everyone but there are laws that regulate life inside the church," he said. He said ministers in the Church had to accompany all people, including those not conforming to the rules, with the patience and love of a mother. The Church teaches that women cannot become priests because Jesus chose only men as his apostles.

[1/5] Pope Francis attends a welcome ceremony at Parque Eduardo VII during his apostolic journey to Portugal on the occasion of the XXXVII World Youth Day, in Lisbon, Portugal, August 3, 2023. The crowd, which police said numbered about half a million, was the largest in Lisbon since celebrations in 2016 when Portugal's men won the European soccer championships. Thursday's early evening event was the first of several with the pope for World Youth Day, a gathering that takes place every three years in a different city. One of the young people who addressed the pope before he spoke asked him "to put things right in the Church for a better future". He told the crowd the Church had room for everyone, "including those who make mistakes, who fall or struggle", and led them in a chant of "Todos, todos, todos!"

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Tuesday said he would seek to impeach the head of the Supreme Court, after the two powers recently clashed over a court decision to award more state funds to the city of Buenos Aires. Fernandez said in a statement that he had signed, along with various provincial governors, a request for the impeachment of Supreme Court President Horacio Rosatti as well as other members of the top court, escalating a fight with the judiciary. Fernandez had rejected a Supreme Court ruling in December to give a larger proportion of state funds to the opposition-controlled city of Buenos Aires, before backtracking and saying that he would comply with the ruling he called "unfair". Reuters could not immediately reach the Supreme Court or Rosatti for comment. Fernandez called on his Frente de Todos coalition to support his plan to start the impeachment process in Congress.
President Fernandez, powerful Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and Economy Minister Sergio Massa, all languish on around 30% positive image, according to an October survey by pollster Ricardo Rouvier & Associates. I don't think this will change the electoral scenario in Argentina at all," political analyst Sergio Berensztein told Reuters. Lula, after his win, wore a cap in support of VP Fernandez de Kirchner. President Fernandez meanwhile said Lula would make his first overseas visit to Argentina once in office, a reversal from cool ties under Bolsonaro between the trade partners. "I think this has more to do with politicians' views than the real effect of the election on actual people," he said.
